Ascent/Descent: 4280m (Pheriche) – 4440m (Chyakurwa Kharka) – 4280m (Pheriche)
I take back what I said about Pheriche – to a point. It really is bleak and windy, but last night the stars were more clear than I’d ever seen them, moonlight glinting off the snow and making the place really seem mystical, ethereal. This morning, despite the bitter cold it was a wondrous landscape with maybe an inch of snow on the ground, cloud teasing the higher peaks.
Today’s short walk was just to get our bodies used to working inside the 4,000m zone, and we must have spent about an hour or more doing photo-breaks. Up on Chyakurwa Kharka you could see two lovely examples of glacial valleys – the flat bottom, shallow sides, moraine, the whole lot. A wonderful example of Nature at work.
