1745hrs, Monjo
Walk-time: 3.5hrs and 3.5hrs
Descent: 3820m (Debouche) – 2835m (Monjo)
Perfect moments are hard to find, so when you find one it’s best to take advantage of it. Today I found one of them on the way down from Tengboche monastery. Up front with Lucy, Sue and Chhopte (our Sherpa) I stopped and sat on a rock, looking out onto the Khumbu region in brilliant sunshine, gentle music in the background…all I needed was some cold apple juice and Amanda. Yet even without them, with my mind clear of all the troubles and worries, it was more than enough. Those two minutes made this entire trip worthwhile.
Raj, Sue, Lucy and I arrived in Monjo just past five this evening, managing to beat even our tents! CJ, Han, Matt, Vicki and Danny all turned up 45min later, only for CJ to discover a rock had been hidden in her backpack the whole way from Namche. As she spluttered in anger and showed off said rock, Alistair came in and delivered a rather brilliant line when CJ gave him the stone to hold:
“That is a significant piece of rock.”
In all, I am starting to tire. Even though downhill is not as strenuous on the muscles it does pain the joints, and after a while it does start to become as hard if not moreso than uphill. My feet burn and stink now, and I am really looking forward to my shower in Kathmandu. I will be buying fresh clothes in Lukla to change into at Kathmandu, and will luxuriate in that water no matter how brown the water may be.
Thoughts are now turning to home-time; we have started discussing what we’ll do, when and how, and I am looking forward to a cheese, bacon and pickle sandwich – and of course my g/f.
